Washoe County is experiencing an unprecedented surge in criminal trials, with more jury trials taking place here than in any other county in Nevada.
In fact, Washoe has recently surpassed Clark County in trial volume, despite Clark having nearly five times the population.
This spike has stretched the courts, public defenders, and juror pools to their limits, leading to longer delays and higher costs.
Police associations warn that suspects are re-offending while cases stall, and public defenders call the added workload an “unfunded mandate.” The growing number of acquittals and dismissed cases also raise questions about how effectively justice is being delivered.
- Reno’s violent crime rate reached 571.9 per 100,000, nearly 57% above the national level.
- Washoe County’s violent crime rate has exceeded the national average every year since 2015, peaking at over 530 per 100,000 in 2017.
- Property crimes in Washoe County totaled 2,194 per 100,000, compared to the national rate of 1,900 per 100,000.
- Reno’s property crime rate climbed even higher, at 2,555.6 per 100,000, about 30% above the national rate.
